MELANOTAN II

Investigated for its ability to stimulate melanin production, Melanotan II is of research interest for tanning responses and related endocrine effects.

Laboratory and educational research purposes only.

What is Melanotan II?

Melanotan II is a synthetic analogue of the naturally occurring peptide α-MSH (alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone). It was originally developed to stimulate skin tanning as a protective mechanism against UV radiation. MT-II also interacts with other melanocortin receptors, giving it additional effects on libido, appetite, and energy balance.

Mechanism(s) of Action

Melanocortin receptor agonist — binds to MC1R in melanocytes, stimulating melanin production (darker pigmentation).

MC3R & MC4R activation — influences appetite regulation, energy expenditure, and sexual arousal.

MC5R involvement — may play a role in exocrine gland function and metabolism.

Increases melanin dispersion in skin cells, providing UV protection.

1. Skin tanning (photoprotection) — darkens skin pigmentation without excessive sun exposure, reducing UV damage risk.

2. Potential skin cancer protection — by boosting melanin, may help protect against melanoma and UV-related skin cancers.

3. Enhanced libido — MC4R activation increases sexual desire and arousal in both men and women; studied as a treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) and female sexual dysfunction.

4. Improved erectile function — early clinical trials showed benefit in men with ED not responsive to PDE5 inhibitors.

5. Appetite suppression — may reduce food intake via central melanocortin pathways.

6. Increased energy expenditure — theoretical benefit for weight management (still under study).

7. Mood effects — some anecdotal reports of enhanced mood and reduced stress (not well studied).

Summary:

Melanotan II is mainly valued for tanning and sexual function enhancement, with added effects on appetite and energy balance. While promising, it carries risks of mole darkening, melanoma concerns, and side effects like nausea and flushing, so its use remains experimental.
